Affixa Brings Webmail to Your Desktop

Affixa is, at its core, an e-mail management application. It acknowledges the fact that people are switching from desktop e-mail clients to webmail, and therefore it focuses on bringing better support for Gmail and Yahoo Mail to your desktop. It doesn't stop there though - it's a well thought out application that offers a lot more.

Affixa is a desktop application; after installation, it will ask to become your default e-mail client, which is basically required for it to work. Its main feature is taking over "mailto" links and adding the possibility to send stuff directly to your webmail accounts, such as Gmail and Yahoo Mail. It also has the option of automatically employing drop.io for sending large files; automatic shrinking of attachments (for example, you can set all images you send to be shrunk to several predefined sizes), and you can even set advanced rules for certain attachments, if you think they might cause problems for certain recepients.

Whether you're going to like Affixa or not depends a lot on your e-mailing habits. I, for example, am so used to merely opening Gmail and doing everything e-mail related from there, that most of Affixa's features seem superfluous.

If your job requires you to spend several hours checking and sending e-mails, and you're looking to make better use of that time, you should definitely check what Affixa has to offer.

Explore the Night Sky With Stellarium

Have you ever looked up at the night sky wondering where those elusive constellations are? Do you wonder what that really bright star (or planet) is called? With Stellarium, you will wonder no longer!

You may have heard of Celestia, a great program that lets you leave planet Earth and explore space from beyond. Stellarium is similar to Celestia in some ways, but it allows you to view and explore the night sky exactly as it would appear from any location on Earth. Like Celestia, it is also available for Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows.

When you first launch Stellarium, you'll find that you are looking at the sky as it appears in Paris, France. If you are located in Paris, then you're all set. However, chances are that you are not. Fortunately, changing your location is easy.

You can either press the Location window button in the menu bar on the left side of the screen, or press the F6 key. You'll then see the location window.  You can select your location in a few different ways.

Once in the location window, you can select your location by clicking on the map, searching for your location, or entering your location co-ordinates.  If you have a decimal latitude/longitude for your location, you will have to convert your location to degrees, minutes, and seconds.  If you have entered your exact co-ordinates, select a name for your location and click the Add to list button. You may also want to click the Use as default checkbox.

If you're using this during the day, you'll probably want to advance the time of day to nighttime.  There are buttons to navigate through time on the right side of the bottom navigation bar.  Just click the Increase time speed button (or press L on your keyboard) a few times to get things moving.  Then click the Set normal time rate button (or press K on your keyboard).

Another way to move through time is to jump to a particular date and time rather than fast forwarding or rewinding.  Click the Date/time window

This week we are going to do something a little different. I am in Bermuda taking a little weekend R&R after a speech, as well as working on my book. There is not the time for the usual letter this week, but I have asked Barry Ritholtz to write about his new trading program, FusionIQ, for reasons I will talk about below.

But first, and quickly, if you are planning on attending my Strategic Investment Conference this April 2-4 you need to act soon. You can get more details at the end of the letter. And the first of the "Conversations with John Mauldin" is up. We recorded it this week, with Ed Easterling and Dr. Lacy Hunt. I thought it went very well for an inaugural talk. The transcript is there already. For those who have subscribed, you should have received an email and be able to log in and listen or read the transcript. And I welcome feedback as we launch this new service. And I want to thank Tiffani, Ryan, and Anne in my office, who have worked long hours getting this ready. There is a lot of back-room work that has to be done to make something like this available, and I am happy to have their support.

Warning: This e-letter is about a new trading platform that I think is interesting. While not trying to be promotional, it will offer you a product at the end. As I write below, there is reason to think about what tools other are using when you are trading against them; but for those of you who are looking for economic analysis, skip this and wait till next week, when I am back in the office. For the rest of us, let's jump right in.

That's something I hear in the office every day — from professional traders, money managers, and hedge funds. These markets have been brutal, and the competition has been relentless.

For the individual investor, it is important to understand who your opponents are on the field of battle. Sports and war metaphors abound, because they are consistent with what you are going up against each day. In addition to always battling Mr. Market, as tough an opponent as there is, your rivals are also anyone else buying or selling stocks. They, too, are looking for ways to produce positive returns.

Consider what Charles Ellis, who helps oversee the $15-billion endowment fund at Yale University, said:

LetMeBook is rather unusual flight search tool, powered by a guy named Nico. When you need to find the cheapest air fare to a destination,  you submit the flight details (Departure, destination, return dates etc.,) and your email using the online form. He manually searches for the cheapest flights and sends your the results by email . And then you decide which one to book.

Or if you have already found a flight, you submit the flight information and he checks whether your air fare is the cheapest one. You get the results in your email.

Since he does it all manually, the response might take up to 24 hours. You can check fares for any flights, both domestic and international, no matter where you are from.

For example I searched for a Los Angeles -> New York flight and found one with Virgin America for 126$  on expedia.com. I sent an email to LetMeBook to see if he can find anything cheaper. He found the same flight for 119$ on priceline.com
