We've already shared our favorite Facebook applications to combat workday blues, and we've pointed you towards some great online shows to escape the daily grind, but sometimes you just need a mobile-friendly solution for those never ending all-hands meetings.

So whip out your phone and download these five free apps that will either keep your gaming fetish in check or test your ability to shoot virtual hoops, smash digital moles, master finger mazes, and keep blob-like creatures safe from harm.

1. iBasketball

iBasketball, which hails from SGN, creators of iBowl, turns your iPhone into a Wii-like object that you can use to interface with the game for some virtual BBall action.

To get in the game, just use your phone and literally make the shot motion, as if you were actually playing basketball, when holding the phone vertically. You can even dribble, just hold the phone horizontally and make the dribble motion. Sure your coworkers will think you're crazy, but you'll be enjoying a game of around-the world, and when they eventually get jealous you can kick them off the court in a live one-on-one match.

2. Whack 'em All

Remember the arcade game where you would pick up a mallet and whack the moles as they popped up. It was certainly good then, but now there's something slightly better that you can play without the arcade prices or screaming children.

whack 'em all

Whack 'em All play is almost exactly the same as arcade play, but instead of a mallet you use your fingers. Level one will start you off with one variety of critter and one super adorable kitty that you need to keep safe — do not beat the kitty. As you progress through each of the nine levels, new critters and furry animals are introduced to complicate the whacking mess. Pretty soon you're mind and fingertips will get lost in a sea of furry-resembling moles, rabbits, and gophers. With intricate scoring, bonus options, and a sneaky shake trick, Whack 'em All is certainly a hoot and arguably a more enjoyable alternative to the real thing.

3. Mazefinger

If finger speed and agility are your personal strengths, then MazeFinger was made for you. The app, which has 200 levels and 1000 unique mazes, tests your visual response time and finger maneuvering skills as you attempt to complete each maze in the allotted time period. Obviously, the quicker the better.

Mazes start off ridiculously simple — just drag your finger and follow the path — but before you think you're the master of finger mazes, just wait. Pretty soon, little red boxes start to flash within each maze. The flashing speed and placing of the blocks, which serve as impediments, need to be carefully analyzed before starting the level if you're to achieve the top score.

4. Rolando Lite

Don't let the cutesy graphics or "lite" name fool you, the Rolando app is jam-packed with features, mind-bending levels, and endless entertainment.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to navigate Rolando and his buddies to the end of each level without getting them killed or leaving anyone behind. It's a simple task in theory — tilt the phone to maneuver, use your finger to jump and control mechanisms — but as you level up, you'll notice that each new adventure comes with even more obstacles that make them trickier to traverse, and you'll also be required to save more and more Rolandos to successfully complete your mission.

Each of the levels requires you to use multi-touch gestures, manipulate levers, catapults, trampolines, and even sleeping Rolandos. It's certainly a great way to challenge and entertain yourself at the same time.

5. Warcraft Characters

Are you a World of Warcraft (WoW) addict who experiences game withdrawal while you're chained to your office desk? With over 11.5 million paying Wow subscribers, we know you're out there, and even though we can't bring the game to you, you can get the next best thing in your pocket.

The Warcraft Characters app lets obsessive dedicated WoW players keep current on vitals and horde stats. Just search for character names and you're off and running. You can get specifics on gear, reputation, and basic stats including health, mana, talents, professions, and kills. It's just a taste of the game, but it will certainly wet your appetite for game play post office hours.
